CHAPTER TEN
DESTIN, FL
Tonightâs girl had wandered down the beach, swaying and stumbling, talking to herself. Michael walked up alongside her, reaching out as she stumbled once again. He lifted his arm and felt her hand squeeze his forearm, as they walked, her steps now more stable.
âCareful now,â his voice that of a horse whisperer. Caring. Trusted.
Michael apprenticed under Jason, beginning in middle school while Jason was a senior in high school. They were just drug rapes. He still remembered the first one Jason killed. It was a turning point in their lives. A sacred moment of power like nothing else.
By now he had invested months of watching, becoming expert at identifying girls who drank way too much or were emotional about some drama taking place in their lives. Malcolm Gladwell wrote in âOutliersâ, âten thousand hours is the magic number of greatnessâ. With his ten thousand hours behind him, Michaelâs instincts were honed to identify vulnerability. Targets would inevitably break away from their groups, easy prey as they drifted along the beautiful beaches of Destin.
Jason taught Michael that society was on their side. Girls rarely went to the police when they woke. Embarrassment, stigma, blame, ridicule, guilt - these were the foundations of a successful drug-facilitated sexual assault or DFSA for short. Cops even had an acronym for it. The key was to not hurt them or at least leave no bruises that would show.
His brother Jason had shown him how to single out one from the herd, slip a bit of GHB into a drink, keep your face in the shadows, and leave them sleeping. They werenât sure what happened, and they were scared to have people know theyâd been raped. But Michael was having a hard time leaving them sleeping. At some point in his journey, killing them began to give him more pleasure, more satisfaction, and a greater feeling of power.
âLet me help youâ, he continued to hold her arm, walking with her down the beach. She didnât seem to know what was going on, but he still handed her a water bottle.
âYou should have a drink of water.â She nodded, taking the bottle and drinking several large gulps. One small drip ran down her chin, then dropped to her shirt, a grey teardrop on her white t-shirt.
In a little while, she was still awake but no longer in control, hovering a step from unconsciousness. Twenty-one minutes later, she took her last breath. Michael was sweating more from excitement than exertion. In a few minutes, his mind became clear, and he realized he had a problem to solve. Leaving her passed out on the beach as planned, with a blanket tucked around her to keep her warm was no longer an option. Quickly formulating a new plan, he used the blanket to wrap her body and carried it to his car. There was no one to hear the thunk as her head struck the floor of the trunk.
It was almost impossible to hide all evidence of transporting a body in a car, but the blanket would help.
